So you just bought a Guinea pig? Well do you know where s/he is from or the breed? Lets find out!
American Guinea Pig
Most common breed of guinea pigs. Short haired. Never has rosettes (departure of hair) . Can be dark brown/black, white, or light brown (can have mixed colours).
Himalayan Guinea Pig
Always the same pattern as the picture, very similar to a Siamese Cat. Short haired. can be white and black/brown.
Peruvian Guinea Pig
Has very long hair, most likely straight. Hair departs in all directions, straight down with no rosettes. Can be dark brown/black, white, or light brown (can have mixed colours).
Coronet Guinea Pig
Has only on rosette on the top of the head, hair can be very long or short but it must have that rosette. Can be dark brown/black, white, or light brown (can have mixed colours).
Teddy Guinea Pig
Has very pricked, fuzzy, short hair. Can be dark brown/black, white, or light brown (can have mixed colours).
Skinny Pig Guinea pig
Totally hairless guinea pigs but may have a little hair around the noise and feet. Skin can be coloured.
Silkie Guinea Pig
Long haired,very smooth (hints the name "silkie") and wavy. Hair grows back (towards the rear end). Can be dark brown/black, white, or light brown (can have mixed colours).
Texel Guinea Pig
Very curly hair with a hair line down the middle. Can be dark brown/black, white, or light brown (can have mixed colours).
Abyssinian Guinea Pig
Many rosettes found all over the body. Other than that, they have straight hair. Can be dark brown/black, white, or light brown (can have mixed colours).
Crested Guinea Pig
Similar to an American guinea pig but has a rosette on the head. Has short hair. Can be dark brown/black, white, or light brown (can have mixed colours). If your guinea pig has only one colour and and the rosette is all white, then your guinea pig is known as a white crested.
