Some guinea pigs need more care than others when it comes to hygiene. It all depends on the type of breed you own.
Hair
If your guinea pig has long hair, it may have to be cut because it tends to get in the way for s/he. Do not cut the hair to short, maybe about an inch or two from the skin. If you're frightened to do so, please do not cut their hair. The guinea pig my get fear and move a lot. Please be careful.
When your guinea pig has thick hair, it tends to shed. A simple brushing everyday may help.

Nails
Guinea pigs nails tend to get very long. Cutting their nails is very similar to cutting a dogs nails. You would need a dog nail clipper. You have to hold your guinea pig's paw and cut his nail. DO NOT CUT PAST THE QUICK (the red part of the nail). If the quick is cut by mistake, quickly get tissue and cover the nail (not to tight). Once the bleeding has stopped, let the wound heal for a couple of days; your buddy will be back to normal in no time.
Bathing
Washing your guinea pig IS NOT necessary, but if you want him/her to smell good, i suggest you bathe him/her. In a regular pet shop, you should be able to find rodent soap, one of the animals listed must be a guinea pig.
Use the soap and wash your guinea pig with warm water, do not wet its face; it can harm their ears. If you dont know how to wash your guinea pig, I suggest looking at a Youtube video, it's very simple.
